Restoring Dental Implants - A Practical Course for Beginnners

This course is aimed at dentists who would like to learn how to restore dental implants so that they can introduce this treatment at their own practices. The 3 day course focuses on the restorative aspects of dental implant treatment allowing dentists to competently restore single unit and small multi-unit implant prostheses.

This is an ideal starting point for dentists wishing to get more involved in implant training and for those who already have good links with an implant surgeon. The course qualifies as 22 hours of verifiable CPD


Aims and Objectives

  • Understand the prosthetically driven planning protocols for implant restorations
  • Gain first hand experience of relevant laboratory stages involved in a dedicated on-site laboratory
  • Develop an understanding of implant componentry
  • Gain an appreciation of occlusion related to dental implant restorations
  • Competently restore single/small multiple unit screw/cement retained restorations from planning to final fit



  • Hands on training with two Specialist Prosthodontists and complimentary Laboratory support
  • Small teaching group, maximum 8

  • Copley Meeting Rooms, Cambridge
  • Taking place over three days on 2 Fridays and a Saturday in May and June 2018: Friday 18th and Saturday 19th May and Friday 22nd June 3 full days 9am -5pm approx

  • 22 hours of verifiable CPD

Friday 18th May - Introduction

  • Overview of dental implant uses
  • Appreciate the factors involved in appropriate patient selection
  • Gain an understanding of diagnostic imaging techniques
  • Appreciate the importance of accurate radiographic guides
  • Learn the ideal 3-dimentional positioning of dental implants
  • Practice implant placement on models for use later in restorative exercises

  • Understand and practice the techniques available for capturing implant positions
  • Gain an appreciation of the materials used for impression making
  • Understand the techniques and concept of verification
  • Fabricate a direct chairside provisional using a pre-formed crown
  • Fabricate a ‘lab-made’ provisional from a full contour wax up

Friday 22nd June - Customised impressions, Occlusion & Abutment selection/design,

Fitting restorations, maintenance and complications


  • Understand the process of capturing the developed emergence profile
  • Gain an understanding of occlusion related to implant prostheses
  • Be able to select the appropriate abutment for the implant prostheses
  • Be able to prescribe the appropriate abutment substructure design
  • Learn the sequencing for fitting implant restorations
  • Understand the principles of preload and screw mechanics
  • Understand maintenance protocols
  • Appreciate the common complications encountered with implant prostheses
