The Bridge, Art at Devonshire House Dental Practice

The Bridge

The Bridge is inspired by the poem “As I Walked Out One Evening” by W.H. Auden, a copy of which is at Reception.  This poem is about love and time: love is endless but is always shadowed by time that takes it away. I have tried to capture this in the piece by introducing a rounded circular shape in one half, as a metaphor for endless love, and I have placed the other half slightly behind as the shadow of time.  It also is inspired by the images in the dental books, hence the name.  It actually started life as a two-unit bridge but developed into a more abstract version of this idea.  The Bridge now acts as a metaphor for the passage of time.

Bean an TI

Bean an TI, or ‘woman of the house’ is inspired by the Irish Goddess of Inspiration, Healing and Medicine. Traditionally her virtues are the energising and warm qualities of fire and sunlight that extol the spirit of the truth. I have tried to echo these warm qualities by using bronze.  This also acts as a unifying link to the red brick of the original house.  The shape is loosely derived from crown and root anatomy.  It also has connotations of the lone serpent Aesculapius, Greek God of Medicine, which is already used as a dental emblem.  But apart from all these ideas most importantly it is a beautiful sensual shape.

The Artist Trisha McCrae also works as a hygienist at Devonshire House.
